In 2020, we were thrilled to see MOT alumna Denise Kendrick recognized by the Faculty of Medicine with a Clinical Faculty Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching.

In order to find out more about Denise’s approach to teaching, we asked her what she enjoys about being a member of the clinical faculty and whether she had any advice for new educators or students.

What do you like about teaching?

I truly enjoy being able to support students to grow their confidence as they become healthcare professionals. I think as clinicians we have a unique opportunity to help students feel comfortable working with clients and being a part of an interprofessional team. Once they have this confidence and no longer feel like “frauds,” as I’ve often heard them say, learning the skills comes more easily. I also learn a lot from the students, especially in areas of practice that I don’t use as often. Students often come to placement with skills that I don’t have that they might have learned on a previous placement and I can incorporate into my work.

What advice would you give someone who is considering being a member of the clinical community?

Don’t hesitate, as there are many advantages to being connected to the Department of OSOT. It is these types of connections that allow the continued collaboration between faculty and clinicians. Having a robust clinical faculty representing various areas of practice allows for the MOT Program to keep up with the changing landscape of clinical practice.

What’s your advice to new students on the MOT program?

When you are feeling overwhelmed about how much there is to learn, remember that you will be a lifelong learner. Build your confidence working with clients and be open to learning new skills. Don’t avoid the things that make you uncomfortable on placement. If making a splint terrifies you, get your hands dirty and make one. If presenting on a patient in rounds makes you nervous, take the time to prepare and take this on. These things will not get easier when you are a clinician, and taking the time to practice them while getting feedback isn’t something you have the luxury of doing later on.

The deadline for each year’s nominations is typically toward the end of June. Start thinking about your nominations now, and the 2022 nomination forms will appear on the Faculty of Medicine Awards & Recognition page later in the spring.
