MD/PhD student Chloe Gao, who is supervised by OSOT Associate Professor Dr. Skye Barbic, recently received a prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for her research, ranking tenth in the highly competitive national competition.

Chloe’s study investigates the provision of services for mental health and substance use (MHSU) to immigrant youth of East Asian origin, with whom she will work together to improve their access to these services. The overarching goal of her project, she says, is to “advocate to foster hope and improve systems of care for diverse youth and families impacted by mental illness.”

Chloe’s passion for improving mental health was inspired by personal experiences that she relates in an excellent story by Foundry, where she will conduct her research.
