Professor of Teaching Michael Lee was recently featured in the newest edition of the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES) quarterly newsletter for his research and innovation in the field of health professions education (HPE).
Leaders in the field of HPE help direct the education of the next generation of care providers across the province. The curriculum of HPE emphasizes the educator’s ability to apply theory to education practice. Working at UBC, Michael developed a profound passion for HPE research, particularly in the field of mental health, by connecting deeply with his students, which inspired his first HPE research: understanding how faculty can address the mental health needs of their students.
Michael’s work in HPE continues to evolve. In his current scholarship, Michael has integrated the use of creative media to address difficult topics, inspired by the Research-Based Theatre Cluster, on which OSOT Faculty Drs. Tal Jarus and Laura Bulk serve alongside him on the Steering Committee. Using theatrical performance as a medium, Michael and other interested colleagues created Rock the Boat, an open access educational resource that uses professionally acted scenes and educational resources to provoke dialogue on the intricacies of supervisor-student relationships.
From his experience in educational research, Michael greatly values the power of collaboration among co-researchers. He has fallen in love with participatory action research (PAR) and utilizes the method as the primary way to create a safe and collaborative space.
