Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Kirsten Marchand, who is supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Skye Barbic, was recently featured in the UBC Institute of Mental Health’s (IMH’s) IMH Showcase in her capacity as an IMH Marshall Scholar.
Dr. Marchand’s research supports a youth-centred model of care to improve access to services for young people who use substances. In partnership with Foundry, a provider of integrated services, she consults with youth, service providers, and other stakeholders about what matters most to them, which goals and needs are being met, and what gaps remain to be filled. By combining these diverse perspectives with population-level data, Dr. Marchand aims to paint as full a picture as possible of the challenges facing young people who seek services for substance use and to let their priorities guide her research. She underscored the importance of collaboration in her interview with the IMH:
I get excited when I have opportunities to collaborate with patient partners, service providers, and decision-makers. This helps me ensure that my research is grounded in the local service delivery context and asks the right questions to the right people.
