Dr. Jon Breen’s workshops change attitudes and reframe disabilities in the workplace

A recent series of virtual workshops about reframing disabilities in the workforce led by Research Associate Dr. Jon Breen and Professor Dr. Susan Forwell was recently featured in the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s update on the Strategic Plan in Action.

Dr. Breen’s workshop series Disability in the Workplace! aimed to give attendees a deeper understanding of disability awareness and inclusion in the workplace. Many disabilities are invisible, and people with disabilities can be identified with their perceived limitations rather than being seen first and foremost as people, which, as Dr. Breen points out, has significant impacts on our lives and work.

When we react based on assumptions or emotions, even sympathetic ones, we can overlook the person and their abilities — and these misperceptions have a very real impact on people living with disabilities, in terms of employment, mental health, social integration and more.

The initial series of workshops was open to participants from the Faculty of Medicine, but Drs. Breen and Forwell are now exploring opportunities to further develop the workshops and increase their reach across the Faculty and UBC. After some promising evaluation data showing a change in attitude pre- and post-workshop, the series has the potential not only to positively change individual perceptions about people with disabilities, but to create a culture where we can all feel comfortable to access supports and accommodations, and are empowered to thrive in our workplace.
