Making the Shift: Transitions to Homelessness

Research Summary

Youth may experience many barriers when seeking stable housing. While many supports and housing initiatives are available to help youth, it is unclear which supports and programs are most impactful. This multi-site longitudinal cohort study aims to understand youth’s experiences with homelessness in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. This involved conducting semi-structured interviews with youth (ages 16-24) who had experienced being homeless for at least 3-months in their life and who had been housed at baseline for 3-12 months to gain insights on the short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes of housing transitions. This information will be used to make recommendations on how best to assist youth in attaining and retaining stable housing.
