Core Area: Education

MOT students in class at the OSOT Surrey site, 2024

We aspire to provide an inclusive, evidence-informed occupational therapy and occupational science educational program using innovative teaching methods.

We support our graduates to become highly-skilled, reflective, and confident life-long learners.

We educate learners as future leaders who advocate for equitable access to occupational participation at individual, local, national, and international levels.

Goal 1

Continue to graduate exemplary occupational therapists by revitalizing the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) curriculum guided by the Competencies for Occupational Therapists in Canada and our model of distributed education.

MOT Graduation, Class of 2023

To achieve this goal, we will:

1. Initiate MOT curriculum renewal process

Initiate a Curriculum Renewal process using the Association of Canadian Occupational Therapy University Programs guidelines, beginning in 2025.

2. Establish representative advisory groups

Establish representative advisory groups for consultation throughout the Curriculum Renewal process and review site-based opportunities within the curriculum.

Measure

We will track progress towards this goal, by comparing our MOT students’ National Occupational Therapy Certification Examination (NOTCE) results against the national average.

Goal 2

Uphold and grow the respective strengths and expertise of a diverse faculty to develop and sustain excellence in distributed teaching and learning.

Faculty at the retirement celebration for Dr. Catherine Backman, 2023

To achieve this goal, we will:

1. Create development program for new/junior faculty

Create a development program for new and junior faculty including ongoing training on best practices in teaching and learning, accessibility, new technologies, and distributed education.

2. Continuing professional development for faculty

Create a continuing professional development program for established faculty to support ongoing training in distributed education and best practices.

3. Training and support for clinical faculty

Adopt clear programs of progression, training and support for Clinical Faculty to cultivate and recognize the expertise and value of the wider teaching team.

Measure

We will track progress towards this goal by tracking positive qualitative comments related to distributed teaching in peer reviews of teaching and Student Evaluation of Instruction.

Goal 3

Responsively maintain a variety of educational programs that serve the needs of BC, which include the MOT program, postgraduate research programs (MSc/PhD), education for internationally-trained OTs, and occupational science-centred programs.

MOT students Indigenous Welcome in Prince George, 2024

To achieve this goal, we will:

1. Engage with community to assess gaps

Engage with the BC OT community to understand gaps and opportunities in the education and professional development that the department offers to graduates and practicing OTs, including a focus on equity-denied groups.

2. Explore offering additional undergraduate courses

Explore whether we can offer additional courses at undergraduate level, to introduce a broader range of students to occupational science.

3. Expand the MOT program sustainably

Continue to strengthen and intentionally expand the MOT program sustainably, increasing the number of seats in the program and breadth of regions served.

Measure

We will track progress towards this goal by distributing a mid-point survey to assess whether BC OT needs are being met by our programs.
