An ever present curiosity about new ideas and an interest in solving problems drew me occupational therapy in New Zealand and ultimately, to Canada and the perpetual learning that comes with an academic career.
My career has centred on teaching and educational leadership for which I received a UBC Excellence in Teaching Award in 1990, a 3M Fellowship in 1992 and the UBC Faculty of Medicine Innovation in CME/CPD Award for in 2009. Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Coordinator, Head of the former Division of Occupational Therapy, and Director of the UBC Rehabilitation Science Online Programs are among the educational leadership roles held while at UBC. I became a CAOT Fellow in 2004.
Primary non-work occupations include sailing, reading, gardening, and interior design.
My research is focused on the administration, design, and delivery of distance and e-learning programs, and the implications of the changing education context for sustainable, future teaching in higher education.
I have expertise in designing curriculum and facilitating learning in face-to-face, distance and e-learning environments. Whether learning is face-to-face or online I highly value approaches that create meaningful learning opportunities and facilitate the transfer of new knowledge to practice.
These interests have permeated my design and facilitation of courses in program (service) design and development in occupational therapy and the inter-professional rehabilitation science online programs; and the exploration and application of theory to practice with occupational therapy and MSc (Rehab Sciences) learners.
As an extension to teaching, I have shared my curriculum development, and online program and course design experience with others at UBC and internationally.
