Student Services Manager, David Tsukada, honoured with a UBC President’s Staff Award for Enhancing the UBC Experience

David Tsukada

I remember the first day of my first year when I walked into the building, all I had to do was tell David my first name, and he already knew my last name, who I was, and remembered the many e-mail interactions we had.

I felt welcomed to the school from the first day and that was really because of him and his initial interaction with me.

We are delighted to share the news that our Student Services Manager, David Tsukada has been recognized by a UBC President’s Staff Award for Enhancing the UBC Experience.

This will not be a surprise for those who have come into contact with David – either as a prospective student, a student, or as a colleague. His recognition is much deserved and highlights his dedicated work and his important contributions to the department (which are often behind-the-scenes).

The UBC President’s Staff Award for Enhancing the UBC Experience is a significant accolade, in an award category that recognizes the personal achievements and contributions that staff make to UBC, and to the vision and goals of the university. The President’s Staff Awards are awarded only once a year, and the majority of UBC Vancouver’s 12,000 staff members are eligible, further exemplifying David’s calibre and achievement.

I think David is likely one of the fastest individuals, in terms of replying to email, within the entire university. It really reduces the stress of students. Not only is he quick with his communication, he also makes sure to reply in a very genuine way.

David’s unique contributions to the department

As the Student Services Manager, David Tsukada (he/him) excels in managing the entire student lifecycle, from pre-admission through alumni support. David delivers outstanding personalized service and support, from being the first point of contact for prospective students and continuing throughout students’ enrollment. Students often share positive feedback about his promptness and problem-solving skills.

David is an advocate and resource for inclusive programs, policies, and practices in the Occupational Therapy Program. He is mindful of EDI principles and actively promotes workshops and events to enhance student engagement and belonging. His advocacy extends to tangible improvements, such as supporting the creation of gender-neutral restrooms and a wellness room designed to accommodate diverse needs, including those of individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have varying health conditions. He also prepares and empowers faculty members to proactively support students.

David demonstrates an openness and receptiveness to feedback and is dedicated to continuously refining services and processes to improve the experience for students, faculty, staff and guests. Coupled with his calm demeanor and empathetic consideration of others, David exemplifies an outstanding UBC experience.

David has made me feel valued and seen, while keeping things light-hearted.

David is nuanced in his approach to every student and faculty member. He gets to know everyone so well and is able to see the unique needs and strengths of every person. He anticipates problems well before they happen – and brings people together to co-design solutions. He is exceptionally compassionate and collaborative.

David has definitely helped me out in terms of my accessibility needs and other issues. He is able to anticipate (correctly and appropriately) what my next question is going to be and addresses it before I even need to ask.

David has been a wonderful contact and support to have throughout my time in the MOT program. Starting and navigating a new master’s program can be overwhelming but it was incredibly reassuring to know that I could ask David any questions that would come up along the way. He is very responsive and helpful when any student reaches out to him and never makes you feel like you are bothering him or asking a silly question.

An award-winning year

The President’s Staff Award is the second award David has received this year. Earlier this summer, he was recognized by the prestigious Applegarth Staff Service Award by the Faculty of Medicine for his outstanding contributions.

We are thrilled to celebrate David’s unique and meaningful work in the department, and to shine a light on his importance as a member of the staff team.

David is always extraordinary. And that is not hyperbole. He is always excellent. So, it is difficult to consider a stand-out moment, as all his work is consistently stand-out. He is always willing to problem solve, find a solution and step up. Always.
